On a partially chilly June night, we soon warmed up making the trek to Space with sips of hierbas. Our fellow attendees doing their best Carl Cox impressions, “Oh yes! Oh yes!” like generations before them. We then ventured inside the club for a taste of The Final Chapter to Carl Cox’s Music Is Revolution, and the second date into the 2016 season read as follows.
Coxy’s Intec record label partner Jon Rundell was on warm up duties in the Discoteca and making his first appearance this summer, after riding the waves with pre-party boat party Float Your Boat earlier on. Chris Liebing was up next and shook off any cobwebs with a purist take on techno. A foolproof foreword to Carl Cox, he primed the crowd with lashings of dark and pounding beats.
Carl Cox took over at 3am to a massive reception, for 15 years his residency has drawn thousands of ravers out on a Tuesday evening and is one of the island’s most successful party. Space’s Discoteca was in live and kicking mode with hanging LED columns flashing, lasers rising with the tempo, and moving graphics of Carl Cox’s famous face. “Space! Looking good,” Coxy exclaimed as he packed a punch in the DJ booth diving straight to the meat with mixes barely drifting away.
Letting our sweat beads dry off in the more spacious Terrace, we checked in to see how UNER was doing during his turn, following on from analogue synth and drum machine extraordinaire Guti delivering his live set. ANTS resident UNER weaved in tech-house magic with Luna Semara – ‘Mustafa’. Carl Cox posters new and old were pinned up by the main bar, a nice nostalgic touch for those who have attended year in, year out. A more mellow mood was on offer in the Sunset Terrace hosted by Ibiza Global Radio, a drum kit was in action garnering a clap along from the crowd.
Hearing a remix of Audion’s ‘Mouth to Mouth’ is guaranteed in Ibiza at the minute, the remix package released to mark a decade since the original. Carl Cox doused the Discoteca with Riva Starr’s galactic version, Coxy dancing along like the rest of us. Is it possible to have too much of a good time? Nope, but Carl looked pretty close. A taste of things to come for the rest of Carl Cox’s Final Chapter year.
