“Jamie Vardy’s having a party” is a chant most football fans are very familiar with. The England and Leicester City striker has had a meteoric rise to fame, truly starting from the very bottom and working his way to the very top of English football. Having said that, it wasn’t all rosy in the garden and Vardy nearly traded in his life for a different type of party, a party that we would be more familiar with!
After moving from non-league Fleetwood town to then Championship side, Leicester City, the 30 year-old was struggling with confidence. Having scored just 5 goals in 29 matches for the Foxes after his relatively large transfer fee for a non-league player of £1 million, he considered quitting the game and moving to Ibiza to work as a party rep!
Craig Shakespeare, Leicester City’s manager who was at the time working as Nigel Pearson’s assistant manager recalled that he was going through a rough patch in terms of confidence. “Jamie would be the first to admit he was going through a rough patch. Myself, Nigel and Steve were here to support him.”
Jamie decided to stick around, casually broke the Premier League goalscoring record for goals in consecutive games (11 games) and propelled the 5,000-1 outsiders to a Premier League Title. Not bad Jamie!
“Thankfully, he didn’t go to Ibiza – I think he has made the right decision.”
Well, there you have it folks! It’s not just us that have thoughts of quitting your job and moving to Ibiza! Professional footballers are human after all!
